Marilyn and I were in southern Illinois for a photo shoot. Thunderstorms had been passing through the area since the night before feeding the local streams with torrents of water. We were hoping to see some of the waterfalls in Shawnee National Forest in all their glory and we were not disappointed. To get to the bottom of the falls we had to hike a rocky ridge downstream to access the creek bed and then hike back to the falls. There was no one else around as we hiked upstream to the falls. Soft light from an overcast sky filtered down through the deep forest's green canopy to this beautiful rocky stream bed. We could hear the roar of the falls long before we could see it. This painting depicts our first look at the falls from the stream below.
